Loxton Golf Club 2010 Championships
Report by Steve Patching
Ramon Thorne and Marlene Tyler are the 2010 Loxton Golf Club Champions. It was Thorne’s fifth title, having won his first title in 2005, while for Tyler, it was her tenth title since her initial win in 1995.
Thorne defeated Darryl Tyler five and four. The pair were locked together after eighteen holes but Tyler tired over the second eighteen while the younger Thorne, was able to maintain his high standard throughout the round. Thorne established an early lead when Tyler double bogeyed the first hole and managed to extend his lead to three after winning the eighth and ninth holes. He clearly took the honours in the first nine holes, with eight pars and just one bogey. Tyler gained some momentum on the back nine, winning four of the holes and only conceding one loss on the twelfth, to see them finish square after eighteen holes. Both were playing high standard golf, with Thorne carding 77 strokes and Tyler 78.
Tyler appeared to tire during the afternoon round, being only able to win two holes while Thorne won seven holes to win with a par on the fourteenth. Tyler dropped four of the first six holes in the afternoon but a twenty foot putt for birdie on the seventh, followed by Thorne’s missing a two foot, uphill putt on the eight, allowed Tyler to get back into the game. However, Thorne took the ninth after Tyler’s drive left him in the left side rough, and Thorne then parred the next five holes to take the match. When the contest ended, Thorne was only two strokes over the card for the afternoon round. Both players drove extremely well, but Thorne’s short game proved to be the difference.
Marlene Tyler had to battle all of the way before she took her tenth title. First time contender, Kerrin Williams, played excellent golf and did not succumb until the thirty fourth hole. The pair halved most of the holes in the opening round, but Tyler was able to edge ahead by three holes. She extended this to four after the twentieth hole, but Williams struck back by taking three of the next four holes. The game seesawed for the next five holes before Tyler took the twelfth and thirteenth holes with pars. Both parred the fourteenth and Williams’ par on the fifteenth reduced Tyler’s lead to two. Both drove into the left side rough on the sixteenth. Tyler’s low recovery shot from a difficult lie carried through the sand bunker and set her up for a match winning par. Williams also recovered well and followed up with a fine pitch over the bunker, but her bogey was not enough to force the match to the seventeenth hole.
In the other grades, Michael Taylor took the men’s B grade title, defeating David Sunman two and one. Sunman went to an early lead of three after six holes, and was able to maintain a lead until Taylor eventually drew even on the twenty second hole. Neither could establish an ascendant position for the next twelve holes, but Sunman found trouble on the second to last hole to leave Taylor with a narrow win.
Garry Mudge defeated Bill Wilson in the B Grade four and two and Andrew ”Curly” Golding won another close contest over Brenton Chapman in the D Grade, two and one.
Jenny Ling won her first club championship, defeating Julie Cooney in the women’s B Grade, two and one, and Deidre Fogden took the C Grade title, but not before newcomer Karen Flight forced her to the twenty eighth hole.
