Loxton Club Opening Day Pinehurst

Sunday 28 February 2010

Keeping with tradition, Club Champion, Ramon Thorne, struck the first ball of the Loxton Golf Club’s Winter season. Earlier, Club Patron, Ian McInnes addressed the competitors and reminded them that after twenty years, the Club will again be hosting the SA-Victorian Country match this October. It was in the 1990 contest that the course record was set by the then amateur Victorian golfer, Stuart Appleby.  His 67 remains the course record.

A good field of competitors contested the Loxton Club sponsored event.  Despite the perfect conditions, teams struggled to make big inroads into their allocated handicaps, as is typical of the Pinehurst format of the game.

Peter Moller and Sue Britton were easy winners in the Mixed competition, winning by nearly three strokes over Peter and Dianne Harman. Starting off the 14th tee, Moller and Britton parred four of the first five holes they played, with a bogey on the 16th their only blemish. They continued to score so well that they could absorb a triple bogey on the par five 3rd and still finish nearly three strokes clear of the Harmans.

In the Men’s competition, Tom Edwards and Ash Pfeiler edged out Brett Proud and Brenton Chapman by less than a stroke. Starting on the 10th tee, Edwards and Pfeiler had a rough start, double bogeying the first two holes, but they then reeled off seven pars over the next eight holes and maintained that form to the end of the round. Playing directly behind them, Proud and Chapman were able to match Edward’s and Pfeiler’s stroke score of 82. In contrast, they started with two pars and later birdied the 1st and 4th holes, before finally falling short by less than a stroke.

In the nearest to the pin contest, Joy Bullock had a day out, winning balls on the 2nd and 12th holes.

In Saturday’s final summer program event, Hayden Cook and Peter Steele tied on 37 Stableford points, with Cook winning on count back. They edged out the extremely consistent Hassan Kara-Ali by one point.

The Adelaide Cup long weekend sees many Club members travel to Millicent, but events are also scheduled at Loxton on all three days.
