Saturday’s hot conditions saw all competitors taking to the course early in the morning for the Loxton Golf Club’s final par event of the summer season. The course was in excellent condition with the fairways having completely recovered from their poor condition three years ago. Golfer’s also welcomed the lowered first cut but still found scoring difficult.
Steve Patching reversed some recent poor form with a fine plus two, with a group of four players two points behind, all squaring their cards. Ramon Thorne won second spot on a count-back from Andrew Baker, Barry Rollbusch and Peter Harman.
Patching started well. He parred the first and then holed his bunker shot on the third to be plus two after three holes, and managed to maintain good form for the remainder of the round. Thorne played his usual, consistent golf. Pars on the final holes were enough to ensure that he would be the favourite in any count-back result.
Janice Sawade edged out Kerrin Williams in the Women’s event. Sawade drove well all day and putted solidly, and finished with minus four. Williams had a poor start, falling to minus five after eight holes, but then regained her form and stroked the ball extremely well on the back nine to finish a close second.
On Wednesday, David Unferdorben again scored well to win comfortably with thirty eight Stableford points.
The summer season ends next Saturday with a Stableford competition, followed by the winter season Opening Day on Sunday. Sunday’s format is the usual Men’s and Mixed Pinehurst event, 9.00 am start.
