Summer Monthly Medal

After being sidelined through injury last week, Bruce McCleary celebrated his return to good health with a superb net sixty seven to win the Loxton Golf Club’s February Monthly Medal. Playing off a twenty one handicap, McCleary carded eighty eight. He started with a double bogey on the first hole but pars on the second, third and sixth holes and a birdie on the difficult eighth hole allowed him to turn with just forty three strokes. His back nine included three more pars. McCleary’s round could have been even more spectacular, as he later admitted to three putting a number of holes.
McCleary’s only serious rival was Peter Harman. Harman was also in great form, scoring a one over par seventy three, for a net sixty eight. He was out in thirty eight and broke par on the back nine, requiring just thirty five strokes.
His only blemish for the round was a double bogey on the par five sixth but he made up for that mistake with birdies on the fourth and fifteenth holes. Typical of anyone having a great round, Harman’s short game was on fire. He had fourteen putts on the front nine, and only nine putts on the back nine. Harman only found the green in regulation twice on the back nine, but fine chipping enabled him to one-putt each hole.
Despite the course being in superb condition and the weather benign, no one else managed to better their handicaps, with Hassan Kara-Ali and Peter Moller being the next best performers. Both finished on net seventy four.
Jenny Ling was a comfortable winner in the Women’s competition. Playing off thirty three, her net seventy four was four stokes better than her nearest rivals, Sue Britton and “Bonnie” Tyler, each scoring net seventy eight.
